What is the GRE?

The Graduate Record Examination – General Test is a test that allows universities to assess the qualifications of prospective students and their potential for graduate studies.

GRE scores represent a common measure against which students who otherwise have quite different backgrounds (field of study, undergraduate university, country, native language, etc.) are compared.

Undergraduate grade point average and GRE performance are the two most important indicators that universities consider when selecting students to accept.
The GRE was created and is distributed by the American organization Educational Testing Service (ETS).

What is it examining?

Test takers are assessed in three areas: Analytical Ability, Verbal Ability and Quantitative Ability. The exam is conducted in English.

Analytical Writing Section

It tests the candidates' ability to present their opinions in writing. The skills of logical analysis and synthesis are assessed with two types of presentation:
Analysis of an Issue: The examinee is asked to take a position on a topic of general interest, developing logical arguments.
Analysis of an Argument: The examinee is asked to comment on the arguments or conclusions of others regarding their adequacy from a reasoning point of view.

Quantitative Section

This section assesses proficiency in the knowledge and use of basic mathematical concepts. It includes 2 types of multiple-choice questions:
Problem Solving: Approximately half of the questions assess knowledge and use of concepts such as percentages, equalities, mathematical notation, special triangles, mean, median, probability. The ability to interpret diagrams and solve mathematical problems is also assessed.
Quantitative Comparisons: The remaining multiple-choice questions ask the examinee to compare certain quantities and conclude whether they are greater or smaller or whether this cannot be determined with the available information.

Verbal Section
This section examines the comprehension of written language as well as the knowledge of grammar and vocabulary of the English language, with 4 types of tests:
Sentence Completions: You need to find the words that meaningfully complete a number of sentences.
Analogies: You are asked to choose a pair of words that have the same relationship to each other as a pair presented as a model.
Antonyms: You need to choose the word that has the opposite meaning to the one originally given.
Reading Comprehension: The comprehension of a written text and the drawing of correct conclusions from its information are examined with multiple-choice questions. The texts come from the fields of social sciences, humanities or natural sciences.

Observations

An additional Pretest Section (Verbal or Quantitative) may be asked to be answered by the examinee in any order after the Analytical Writing Section. Responses to this section are not scored but are evaluated for possible use of these questions in subsequent tests. The examinee does not know which of the sections is not scored and must answer all of them normally.

Also, at the end of the test, the examinee may be asked to answer a Research Section. Answers to this section are also not scored.

What does GRE CAT mean?

The GRE is a Computer Adaptive Test – CAT, and is given in English. Adaptive means that the test questions are not predetermined but are selected by the computer from a large bank of questions depending on the test taker’s answers. The questions selected by the computer are of different levels of difficulty. The test begins with a question of medium difficulty and depending on whether the answer is correct or incorrect, the next question is of greater or lesser difficulty respectively. The final score is calculated based on the number of correct answers and the level of difficulty of the questions answered correctly.

You should know that:

Because the questions are selected sequentially, the examinee is not allowed to correct his/her answer to previous questions.
It is important to answer the first questions of the test correctly, as well as not to leave any unanswered questions at the end of the test.
During the test, the examinee will be asked to answer an additional section (verbal or quantitative) which is experimental and will not be scored. The examinee does not know which section will not be scored, so he/she needs to be equally careful with everything.

When can I take the GRE exam?

GRE exams are held in Athens and Thessaloniki, 3-4 days a week.

How can I register for the exam?

• Orally by phone 0031 320 239 540 in the Netherlands. Payment is made by credit card.
• Via the Internet. Visit the relevant GRE links on the site.

When do I need to register?

Although the exams are held daily and you can theoretically register up to two days before the exam, it is very important not to leave it to the last minute. Your official results will reach the educational institutions of your interest 10-15 days after your exam, so the most logical thing is to look for a “safe” exam date, taking into account the deadline set by the Universities for receiving the scores – calculating a few extra days for unforeseen delays or obstacles that may arise.

How is the GRE scored? What scores should I achieve?

Scores are given separately for each section of the test. The highest score in the Verbal and Quantitative sections is 800 and the lowest is 200. The Analytical Writing Section is scored from 0 to 6.
Universities usually set minimum GRE scores that prospective students need to achieve in order to be included in the selection process. So contact the Universities you are interested in as early as possible to find out what the "basis" is and the deadline for sending your application and scores.
Usually, higher scores than the minimums set by the universities are required for the selection of students.

When are the results sent?

Unofficial results are received by the examinees immediately after completing the Computer Adaptive Test. Official results are sent by the Educational Testing Service to the examinee and to the Universities of his/her choice within 10-15 days after the examination.
During the test, the examinee can declare that the official results be sent to up to four universities at no additional cost. Therefore, you should have decided in advance the universities of your choice. The list of universities and their codes can be found in the official ETS Bulletin.
After the test, you can request that the results be sent to other universities but with an additional cost of $23 per university.

How many times can I be tested?

Only once within a calendar month and up to 5 times within a 12-month period.

You should be aware that although your performance on the second test will likely be better, there is also a chance that it will be worse, especially if you have not done any further preparation. Additionally, if you have taken the test more than once, ETS will send all of your scores from the last five years to your chosen universities. Therefore, you should make every effort to achieve the score you want the first time.

How long are my results valid for?

Scores are valid for 5 years.

What is the cost of the exam?

The cost of the exam is $190.

Can I postpone or cancel the exam?

Changing the date or time as well as canceling the exam can be done no later than three days before the exam (not including the exam date and the date of the request).
Changing the date or time costs an additional $50.
